Reading Pride and Prejudice in the dining room of my cottage in Chawton, a few hundred metres from the house where Jane Austen completed her masterpiece.

The English countryside is a beautiful place, full of flowers, green hills and fairy-tale cottages. It has also been a major source of inspiration for hundreds of writers, artists and poets, not only in the UK.

The English countryside has inspired thousands of books and poems, many of which are masterpieces of British and world literature.

In this video, part of a mini-series of two videos, I present the first three novels in my selection of books set in, inspired by or talking about the English countryside.
